#SOMALI EATS REVIEW 333 Racecourse Road, Kensington

Updated: Jun 9, 2018

This Somali eatery #MelbourneRestaurants is a new and welcome addition to the growing number of african restaurants populating racecourse road in #Kensington.

Somali Eats is comfortable and has a bright sunny cafe feel to it and there's also outside seating for those who like to sit roadside and people watch.

Somali cuisine is a melting pot of many culinary influences. From India to the middle east and as far reaching as Italy! And this is reflected in the food at Somali Eats.

Most of the dishes here are meat driven so if you are a vegetarian your options will be limited. All meals come with a complimentary lamb soup which is a winner. The broth is heavenly and flavoursome and the addition of a lemon wedge brings a nice citrus punch to it.

I started off with a sambusi which is a triangle shaped morsel of goodness that is not too dissimilar from an indian samosa. One was filled with minced beef and onions and the other was filled with curried vegetables. It came with a lime green sauce on the side which packed a punch with a nice spicy chilli hit. For mains I tried the basto spaghetti with lamb. A generous serving of tender lamb on the bone with a super tasty spice rub. Accompanying the lamb was spaghetti a la napoletana style minus the basil, the italian influence. I really enjoyed the lamb but next time I'll try it with the traditional basmati rice. The side salad was a little pedestrian on it's own but the green dipping sauce helped to elevate it. Also make sure to take home some Somali sweets. Somali halwa is a glutinous flour based sweet flavoured with cardamom and cooked in ghee. If you like turkish delight then you'll love this.

Somali Eats has good tasty traditional homecooking which is evident in the fact that it is supported and frequented by the local Somali community. Check this one out!
