Our last night in #Shanghai #China and my friend and I were treated to an outstanding meal at San Ma Lu. What made it even more memorable was that we stumbled across this gem by accident when we were walking the streets at night trying to find somewhere to go for dinner. We sensed this place was special judging by the crowd that was gathering outside the restaurant as the time approached 6pm. We followed suit and perched ourselves on one of the outdoor stools as we waited for a free table inside.
The owner who was hovering around outside was charming and personable. He even sat down with each group of awaiting diners patiently showing and explaining the menu as we waited for our names to be called. Once in, we navigated our way across the ground floor, upstairs to a maze of private little dining rooms. We thought it was pretty cool having a small room to ourselves.
To say the food was excellent is an understatement. It was one of the most delicious meals I had in this bustling metropolis. What a way to say goodbye to such an amazing gastronomic city that is Shanghai.
Here is a description of the dishes we ordered:
1. SWEET n SOUR MANDARIN FISH
is a quintessential dish from Jiangsu province which borders Shanghai to the north.
A sweet, tangy sauce covering a scored crispy fried whole fish with diced carrots and peas.
2. BRAISED PORK BELLY IN BROWN SAUCE
another classic Shanghai dish (Hong Shao Rou) of braised soy sauce pork belly with quail eggs.
3. GREEN VEGETABLE
similar in look to water spinach but with a different flavour profile, this was simply stir fried in a combination of chinese condiments.
Wherever you look, Shanghai has an amazing smorgasbord of diverse food to try and if you are heading to China then it really must be on your list of places to visit.
