GUDETAMA CAFE REVIEW @ Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo, Japan

Updated: Jun 11, 2018

The japanese are no strangers when it comes to themed cafes. In fact they are very common throughout #Japan. So when I stumbled upon a #cafe based on the cute egg character Gudetama, I decided on a whim to try it.

Located in the Tokyo Skytree complex, this was meant to be a pop up cafe but the fact that it's still going strong is testament to how popular this little androgynous egg is fast becoming. For those not in the know, Gudetama belongs to the same studio that created Hello Kitty. His / her lazy and apathetic nature is what endears Gudetama to his / her audience and this has resulted in appearances on everything from t shirts and coffee mugs and even a cartoon series.

On the menu you will find an assortment of dishes with Gudetama's mug adorning each dish. I went for the yakisoba stir fry noodles which was surprisingly very tasty considering I came with no expectations. I really thought the food would take a secondary role to the gimmicky nature of the cafe but I was pleasantly surprised, it actually tasted good!

I washed this down with a cup of icecream soda. It was lime flavoured and had a scoop of ice cream with you guessed it, Gudetama's face on it.

I love how this cafe really brings out the inner child in you. It is so kawaii. If you have kids it's a fun place to bring the little ones and it's also perfect for that afternoon snack in between shopping. But what makes this cafe really special is that it's quirky and it screams japanese and I totally recommend a visit here as you make your way around the land of the rising sun.
